  1. My partner and I had a nice experience at the raw bar at the Cafe O’ Lei Restaurant in Kihei. Delicacies such as oysters, shrimp, clams, ceviche & sashimi are the fare you will typically find at a raw bar counter.

Surprisingly, we don’t have an abundance of these establishments here in Maui. We love this style of food, so finding this place was fun.

It was a busy Sunday night with people waiting for tables, but as we were interested in eating at the bar, we were seated immediately. Greeted with a smile & no delay, I asked our bartender if she could make a noteworthy Mojito. It was delicious.

Proceeding to order some food we started with oysters on the half shell. They were offering two different types, the Kumamoto from Washington State, & the Sandy Bay Oyster from Tasmania. We opted for the Kumamoto, smaller in size but definitely not in flavor. We had a moment of silence as we savored the first taste sensations of these smooth & fruity delicacies. We were transported…

They were served with 3 dipping sauces, Ponzu, a citrus soy sauce, a zesty red-cocktail sauce & a red wine vinaigrette with scallions. All delicious, but our favorite was the vinaigrette. We truly savored every morsel.

We also ordered a ceviche which was very flavorful but the texture was not our favorite. If you are familiar with ceviche you know it is a dish usually composed of a raw white fish, “cooked” in lime juice, with onions, tomatoes, chili peppers & cilantro . If it marinates too long in the lime juice it can become “over cooked” & I wonder if that was the texture we were experiencing on this occasion.

The wine menu is also very balanced with an appealing selections & prices. A nice variety of reds, whites, rose’s & sparkling wines.

We ordered a piece of Lilikoi (passion fruit) Cheesecake for dessert – nothing less than awesome…
It is a beautiful restaurant with an inviting atmosphere . Definitely worth a visit for the oysters alone…
